Laptop Charger, smelt burning!?

i was on my laptop and i smelt burning, it was charging at the time, i saw smoke coming from the charger box (dell inspiron 1525). i pulled the cord out of the laptop reli quick and then took it off the mains. the charger is not actually a dell one, but one off ebay that i bought a few months ago, and it came with 1 years warranty so it is still under that. i initially thought my laptop was fine, it worked as normal, but now when i got my brothers charger and go to charge it, it does not charge, and i can smell burning in the charging port of the laptop. what could be wrong with the laptop? and are the people who sold me the charger liable for any of it?
